He also had a joint celebration with Elise and Erik when we traveled down to St. George area and visited Grandma Karen and Grandpa Merle.  Karen was so great to plan a big party for these kids and they were thrilled!

We're sure grateful Cole is in the family!  He has a very tender heart.  He doesn't like to get in trouble and doesn't love to be teased. Most days he comes up the stairs with his shirt on backwards (and sometimes his pants too) so he has learned to deal with that teasing a little better.  He still likes to run around in the yard/sidewalk/deck and flap his arms.  We wonder what he is thinking about - we can tell his mind is spinning, but he just smiles and keeps his thoughts a secret.  He is great at math and strategy games.  His usual is to play mom and dad a Chess match before everyone wakes up on Sunday mornings.  He is a nail picker and a lip sucker.  Not sure how we are going to break those habits???  He still loves to be snuggled and likes me to read to him.  Cole is also very fiesty when it comes to games.  When he thinks something is not fair or out or rules are broken, he gets pretty ticked off.  Sometimes he is dead wrong about those things, but if he's mad, there is no convincing him.  He just has to cool off for a minute and then come back to the game.  He's kinda leveled off about this in card games (although it comes through occasionally) but definitely not in recess games like 4-square.  Flag football and track seasons were postponed or cancelled this spring with all of the corona stuff, but he would still go on runs with Lucy. He's a good runner!  Cole loves to go to school and especially loves math.  Reading is only ok.  He was really sad when school was cancelled and really loved his teacher, Mrs. Youngberg. He's a good little pianist too.  Cole is great about giving thoughtful comments in our family scripture study and I've loved hearing his pure testimony in our family testimony meetings each month.  We sure love our Cole!  Happy 9th!

I don't know if anyone loves birthdays more than this girl!  She looks forward to this day for MONTHS.  And was sad throughout the pandemic that she wouldn't get to do what she wanted.  But it ended up being great!  A couple days before her birthday, Grandma Karen put together a surprise birthday party for my 3 birthday week kids.  We were down south for our trip to Zion National Park.  Gma K had a special cake, water guns (she thought they were bubble wands and I nearly died but she was fine with them filling them up in the fountain), and prizes for games.  So so fun!

On her actual birthday, we open presents (gifts are this girls love language!) Then she went on a date with her dad (loves 1 on 1 time) and joined up with the Tripp family for a Memorial Day outing.  She came home and had an outside late night with her friend and neighbor, Jeanine.  Happy day!

Other happy news was that things lightened up enough that she could have a small outdoor party with 3 friends.  She went horseback riding and was THRILLED.  Elise is definitely an animal lover.

Elise is at her best when she is serving others.  She is so helpful (sometimes overly) and is especially sympathetic when someone gets hurt.  She is super friendly and will chat anyone's ears off.  I think she had the hardest time not being able to see friends during quarantine.  She has big emotions and keeps me on my toes.  When angry Elise comes out, watch out!  I have offered many silent prayers, "Now what do I do?"  But with some alone time, she can usually get herself out of a mood and return just as bubbly and darling as ever.  She is still "little" and I hope that stays for a while longer.  She'll still dress up fancy if I ask her to, loves to swim, wants nothing to do with boys {why would I want to go to a DANCE, when we can do a PARTY instead?!?}, loves creating and big projects.  We love her dearly and are so glad she's in our family.  Happy birthday sweet Elise!

Quarantine Questions

April 22, 2020 - A sweet lady did "porch family photos" and posted them along with a write-up to the Morgan Mom's facebook page.  Fun to get to know some new families virtually.  Here is ours.

It has been amazing (and humbling) to see how fast the world shut down during this pandemic. Our emotions have been all over the place ... gratitude for good health, shock at how fast things closed, worry for my pediatrician husband, loneliness for friends and teachers, relief that some things got cancelled, and happiness to have more game time together and to spend more time in pj's. I've loved having the kids around (most of the time ðŸ˜‰ðŸ¥´) but we were so sad with Tuesdays announcement that schools would be closed til the end of the year. My kids have excellent teachers and they will miss out on their awesomeness. I was sad for the fun end-of-year things that won't happen: Great American program, 1st grade readers theater, preschool fun, awards ceremonies, 3rd grade talent show, Harry Potter party, field trips, orchestra, dance, and ice skating recitals, flag football, track & baseball. Just missing all that "May craziness" that I've complained about in the past. These are such small things and I know it's so much worse for others, but Tuesday I really felt that loss. And I felt such sadness for the Seniors I love. But we have to let ourselves feel the emotion...and then...chin up and move on, making the best of things.
Some of our favorite activities have been: read-a-thon day, science day studying pandemics, lots of puzzles, murder mystery dress-up dinner, whip cream challenge, recreating Legoland in our basement with all our Lego creations and eating apple fries, double screen time day, LOTS and LOTS of recipe experiments, Swiss Family Robinson picnic, spa day, dance-offs, nature walks, home church, organization & remodel projects, etc. It has definitely been a memorable time and I'm grateful to be spending it with my cute little family! ♥️

2.  All that time talking while doing puzzles, lots and lots of games (Tossed Salad)
3.  new activities driving in the car... Teacher parades, drive-thru dinner in the van, drive-by Easter Egg hunt
If you could spend quarantine anywhere in the world, where would you choose?  I was pretty happy to be home.  But wouldn't have minded being home in HI.  :)  If we could have enjoyed Disneyworld or Harry Potter land without all the people, that would have been awesome!
What are your favorite things you've eaten during this time?  Soooooo many yummy things: rice krispie Disney pops, baked french toast sticks, new carne asada and guac recipes for Cinco de Mayo,
What is your favorite movie that we watched?  Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, Avengers - Endgame and Infinity War, Sleeping Beauty
What did you like about homeschooling?  I liked the kids tell me what they were learning.  Lucy is taking Biology and Algebra II through BYU and I liked answering her math questions.  Elise usually had 2 options:  IXL questions or a big project.  She always chose the projects (design your own birdfeeder, taco truck, etc).  That was both fun and exhausting.  Teachers were really amazing with what they put together for the kids - Mrs. Jensen reading books online, Mrs. Youngberg doing polygon Simon Says, etc.
What did you NOT like about homeschooling?  I felt like I had to constantly hound people to stay on task and finish. We'd take breaks, but they hated coming back to it.  People needed my help with something continually.  Lucy was a lifesaver with all the technology logging on to different programs, etc.  Learning how to submit assignments that weren't blank on Google Classroom, kids telling me they were "done" but missed lots of stuff, daily fighting with Erik about writing 5 sentences.
If you could do back to school on Monday, would you like to?  I would love for them to go back to school!  I like having them around, but they are missing out on the fun end-of-year parts of school.  :(  And their teachers are awesome
What are the things you've missed the most?
1.  monthly lunch with a few of my friends - we usually discuss a podcast and I love their insights
2.  not seeing the kids doing their favorite things - Lucy playing tennis, Elise ice skating and not being able to finish her Lion King play, the boys missing out on school programs - Great American for Austin, Talent Show for Cole, and Readers Theater for Erik, Clara in dance
3.  Vacations!  I was sad when I realized I wouldn't be going to Germany over the summer.  :(  And we had a great vacation planned over Spring Break to Phoenix - mostly swimming and relaxing.  We were going to go to a fancy Marriott resort (thanks to Greg) and Great Wolf Lodge.  I think the kids would have loved it!
What was your favorite Come Follow Me lesson?  Or church memory? I loved home church!  Watching George and Austin bless/pass the sacrament each week was a great experience.  Fast & testimony meeting first week of May was especially memorable.  Erik shared how he was never going to fight ever ever again.  George:  really?  Erik:  Well, unless challenged.  hahaha!  Cole gave a tender testimony about being sorry he held Austin up from getting ready for church (locked him out of the closet).  And Austin melted my heart when he talked about always being worried that he would starve if he fasted.  But he followed the prophet with the worldwide fast (April 14) and knew that fasting blessed people.  Oh my goodness!  Everything worth it for that.  He was so well spoken and sincere.
What activities/hobbies have you enjoyed the most during this time?  I have a long list of projects to be done, but didn't feel like I did many of them.  I did quite a bit of organizing, but was kinda spurty.  I do enjoy putting together things for the kids - Legoland day, Murder Mystery Dinner, Art day, etc.
What will you miss when quarantine is over?  Slowing down.  I loved that no one had anywhere to be in the evenings.
What was your favorite thing we did to connect with others (even though we couldn't hang out with them)?  Virtual games - got some really good laughs at Benji's answers especially
Any goals after this?  My goal for the year has been more meaningful, thoughtful, regular prayer.  Sometimes I did well with this during covid.  I also had some good fasting experiences, which have been rare for me.
What have you learned from this experience?  Good time to self-evaluate and family-evaluate.  We knew this time would end, but good time to think about what activities we wanted back and which we were ok to take a break from.
What are you most thankful for?  More time with the kids, George had enough work to get us through, plenty to eat, good health
Things you hope never to forget about this time?  There was a worldwide "unity" that was very unique.  Most countries were dealing with the same problem at about the same time.  It was in varying degrees, but I thought about that often.  I also wondered if this was a preparation time - spiritually, physically - for times ahead.  It was amazing HOW FAST everything shut down.  And shelf stable items disappeared off grocery shelves.  I pondered how many changes within the church in the last couple years have prepared us for this - "home centered, church supported" learning, not waiting for a year before a temple sealing, change of women and children serving as witnesses so baptisms could still go forward with a small group of people, etc.  My testimony of President Nelson as the Lord's living prophet has been strengthened and the importance of "getting things done now."

Writings by Austin

Black Swan writing assignment by Austin May 15, 2020

I know that everyone feels like this really is the worst thing that could happen to us.  But there are some major good points to it.  These include family togetherness, a chance to recover money, and to realize how much stuff you can do by leaving the house.

First, I have really gotten better with my family.  I have played lots of board games with them and learned some new family stories.  I usually like long board games like Settlers of Catan and Killer Bunnies.  We usually don't have time for those but now we have tons.  My dad showed us pictures and told us stories from his mission.  Me and my brothers don't fight as much.  The same can be said about my mom and dad.  That has really changed how I think about social distance.  You can either fight or get along.  We chose get along.

Next, since people are not driving everywhere and shopping, they can keep more of the money they earn.  That could help people who are low on money.   Also, no one is going to restaurants or places like Lagoon.  People don't feel as stressed over their money. This also would help us save up for a bigger vacation after all of this has ended.

Lastly, I have noticed that I feel more grateful for the ability to go beyond the house now that I can't because of distancing.  This may help me get outside more.  That would also make my mom really happy.  I used to go inside and play at my friends houses but now I think of stuff to do outside.

In conclusion, quarantine has really changed my life.  Those changes are family togetherness a chance to recover money and gratitude and to realise how much stuff you can do by leaving the house.  I hope that you feel better about covid now.

(When I reviewed this paper with Austin, I asked him to put in more details.  He added the sentence about Geo and I not fighting as much.  I think we get along quite well, so I was surprised. Me: "Do dad and I fight a lot?" A: "Well, you argue." me: "Really?  Huh.  Well, I guess I'm surprised by that.  I guess we should work on it."  A:  "Does that sentence make you uncomfortable?  I can take it out."  Me:  "Nope.  Leave it in."  But I got a good laugh out of the whole thing.)

This writing assignment really made me smile.  He's a good kid.

Austin is really nice to his brothers.  Really nice.  (almost all the time).
Great American and 40 book challenge winner!
Neither are very easy and he wasn't thrilled about working on them (because they were "optional") but
I was proud of him and I think he was proud too!
